Okay, let me start off with this: I didn't use Phantom Power to power this microphone. I have a Soundblaster ZX soundcard, which ended up powering it just fine. However, while it's perfectly clear enough for me with the power I provided it, I can tell you for sure that using Phantom Power would benefit this mic more than you probably think.
If you're thinking about getting this mic because you can't afford anything better, seriously, get this, and buy Phantom Power at a later date!
I received this Ohuhu Microphone as a test sample by the company to objectively review...so let's review, shall we ?
This Ohuhu Condensor mic actually impressed me for what it includes and for it's surprisingly decent recording quality.
So first the good news...
As far as low cost Chinese made microphones go, you really get a reasonably full sounding condenser mic that picks up the vocal range pretty well including low tones. For the entry level buyer who wants to improve their vocal recordings, this is a huge step up from a cheap "PC" mic or the lousy internal mics on most computers. I haven't recorded any singing yet so I don't know how this mic handles a stronger vocal output across a broader frequency range but for narration or voice-over work, it's well suited. This kit includes a plastic shock mount that needs to be attached to a stand or a boom arm to be useful. For my review, I used a desktop stand from another mic that I own and this kit also includes adapter rings/ screws that let you step down to smaller screw head as well. You get a pop/windscreen filter with this Ohuhu Mic kit that just slides over the gold grille that should cut down on unwanted breath audio and 'P' popping. I was happy to see this item included as it's pretty helpful.
Ok, now for the bad news....
This Ohuhu condenser mic ships with an XLR to mini jack cable which in theory should plug into a regular mini mic jack on a computer...Mac ( but my 2014 iMac 27 does not have a mic jack) or PC. Here's where things can be frustrating for the average buyer. Condenser mics such as these need to be powered by +48v (Phantom) power to be fully functional and audible. If anyone uses the supplied cable, the odds are you will NOT hear a thing from this Ohuhu mic on your computer or it may appear at much lower level. So buyers can purchase an audio interface device that has XLR inputs with +48v Phantom power or an inline +48v power supply that goes between your mic and computer. While not the end of the world, the average user probably doesn't know this and the Amazon link doesn't really indicate this ( though many reviews do). I think the Amazon link needs better technical info for people just stepping into the recording arena as this is an XLR based microphone and not a USB plug and play model. I also noticed that the Ohuhu mic I received looks nothing like the unit on the box but it is the same one that Amazon shows on their site.
I tested this mic using an XLR cable to a Behringer UMC 204hd audio interface ( using +48 Phantom power) connected to an Apple iMac running GarageBand. Again, I thought the results were clean and tones were decent from this entry level mic. A better test would involve singing and recording an instrument to really gauge this Ohuhu mic's response but I was happy with the recording, So apart from the lack of a real manual describing proper usage and the REALLY tacky gold grille (I'm sure some people LOVE It...), I think this mic is a good starter product for most people. Time will tell if the build quality holds up but I'll keep you posted.
The Ohuhu Audio Microphone - Studio Recording Condenser Pro Microphone has a HUGE sound. I use it to record vocals and acoustic guitar. Everything that goes through this mic sounds great. It picks up a bright sound and produces an amazing clarity when listening back to it. The Clip Mount is sturdy and holds the mic in place, I am looking into purchasing a mouth guard for this for an extra clear crisp sound. Love the design of this microphone and the gold tone is very stylish. Theres one slight thing that you just cant connect it to your laptop or computer unless you have some sort of applications that supports the microphone usage. But to top it off, I would definitely recommend this product compared with other leading competitors.
the microphone itself is absolutely beautiful. the gold coloring makes it really stand out. The only issue is that the microphone is a usb cable. i purchased it for a 1/4 inch jack cable but luckily i have an adaptor for it. overall, this is a high grade microphone that works extremely well.
A good microphone that does the job it's meant to do. It's a great value for the price.
Mic was rather cheaply made, however it does seem to work ok. Would not place in a commercial environment! However, if you are looking for a mic for a home setup, this is not a bad choice.
Good microphone for voice overs, works great a step above the microphone used with your PC. Would recommend for recording studio work. Would be also great in a ham shack, have to modify for push to talk but it adds style to the usual ham shack.
I am very pleased with this product! It was very easy to use and install! It has a clip to clip on a desk, or anywhere you would like to clip on to! Very sturdy and durable! With two brightness settings, I love using it for taking high quality pictures for my blog!
I received this microphone as a sample, and in return I'm writing my thoughts about this product to help them improve.
Pros: great design, I like the design. It's simple and very comfortable to hold.
The quality of the microphone itself is great.
Sound quality, so so, I tested on serval platforms, and I experienced some echo and sound capture problem. However, after adjust the cover and the holder, works perfect.
Cons: There is no explaination on the instruction book, like how to place the microphone on the holder etc.
Sound quality, again, sometimes can experience echo and sound capture problem.
The quality of the cover is not that good.
Overall, good for normal recording, with limited budget this is great. However if you are trying to do a professional recording or just want your karaoke singing sounds better, you should aim higher with professional microphone.
